Along with the “Perspectives of Nature” theme comes local artist Lauren Corbin. She described her interests in skeletal and anatomical studies of organic forms:
“My color pallet is composed of muted colors, mostly earth tones, grays, and deep blues. My primary focus is not on color, but of the image or images in the composition without any distraction. I work in a variety of mediums, and create works in watercolor with ink drawings, oil paint, acrylic paint, graphite, and relief and intaglio printmaking. My current body of work is done from photographs I took of birds on a recent trip to New Orleans. Towards the end of the series, I started experimenting with the idea of creating portraits of birds.”
1. If you were not around to explain your work to someone, how do you think they would interpret it? I try to be true to an honest and abstracted representation of subject matter. My work carries no hidden messages and is designed to be aesthetically pleasing. I would hope a viewer would have a positive reaction to my paintings, drawings, and prints. Each viewer will interpret artwork based upon their own life experiences and perspectives.
2. What inspires your art and how does that relate to your current body of work? I have an interest in organic subject matter. My current series is done from photographs I took of birds on a recent trip to New Orleans. Towards the end of the series, I started experimenting with the idea of creating portraits of birds.
3. Is your aim to make an impact on others or do you simply create for yourself? I create work based on current interests. Sometimes my work isn’t necessarily about the subject, but the use of application and experimentation with materials and themes. Examples of this would be the use of different tools and mediums and also the use of pattern.
4. Is there another Jacksonville artist that has inspired you or in some way impacted your style? Being a recent graduate of the University of North Florida, my greatest local influences have honestly been my classmates, professors, and artist friends because we work together and offer each other feedback when we ask for it, and when we don’t!
5. Any closing thoughts or advice to other artists just starting out? Proportion is your best friend.

Very well done, Ms. Corbin. I enjoy your pigeons and I think they were beautifully executed. You will go far with your pigeon-like work. I enjoy your, dare I say “Down to Earth” colors and paintings. You are great and will grow more and more as an artist. I’m very interested in your art and I cannot wait to see your pieces in the future.
